| It was my birthday, February 2020. I had just turned 55 and made a video suggesting that I should probably attempt to figure out what I want to be when I grow up. I was going to post it for a laugh. | It was my birthday, February 2020. | - | For a couple of years everything was turned upside down and it made me think that maybe I really should try to figure out what I should be when I grow up. So, I puzzled and puzzled until my puzzler was sore. For all of 2020 I thought about it. Then in December, a pair of juvenile arsonists made a TikTok video of themselves burning down the office building where we worked. You might have heard about the pain associated with change or getting your cheese moved. Needless to say, 2021 was full of distraction as we tried to put the pieces back together. It took until spring of 2022 to get another building remodeled, and everybody moved in. Between Covid and the fire, the landscape at the office has changed dramatically. Finally, here at the end of 2022, the dust is finally settling enough for me to turn a modicum of attention back to my original question: What do I want to be when I grow up? | + | For a couple of years everything was turned upside down and it made me think that maybe I really should try to figure out what I should be when I grow up. | It occurred to me that this pursuit could be an interesting project. The first part would be how to figure out how to figure it out. My thoughts turned toward the internet. There is no shortage of advice and guidance there. You can find How-To videos for just about everything. | It occurred to me that this pursuit could be an interesting project. | - | My next thought was to try to document everything to help keep me organized as well as to share the experience with anybody bored enough to follow along. I call it Operation Steady Bunny. The basis for the name comes from that old tale of the Tortoise and the hare. The moral of that story is basically slow and steady wins the race. That's a fine sentiment but I'm 57 as of this writing and I have to put a little rabbit speed into the mix. Hopefully the hybrid of Steady from the tortoise and the Speed from the bunny will help me to make progress a little faster. | + | My next thought was to try to document everything to help keep me organized as well as to share the experience with anybody bored enough to follow along. | So why this platform? I considered using WordPress for this but the problem with I have with WordPress is that it likes to put the newest post on top and thus the beginning gets buried pages deep in the past. This makes it hard to follow along from the beginning. | So why this platform? | Who knows, I may find this method is not working and abandon it for something else. Maybe I'll start a YouTube channel as a companion piece. | Who knows, I may find this method is not working and abandon it for something else. Maybe I'll start a YouTube channel as a companion piece. | ||
| - | ===== Figuring out how to figure it out ===== | + | Now you know how we got here and why the next part will be [[Figuring out how to figure it out]]. I'm sure that the internet has some advice and opinions. |
| - | My goal is to try to be as objective and scientific as possible in this process. How do you sort out the first step? Axioms come to mind like "If you do what you love, you'll never work a day in your life." I need a scientific method of determining what I love. I need something with clearly stated objectives and well-defined criteria. | + | |
